What is trauma?

Trauma is something deeply disturbing you experienced or witnessed. It’s often associated with military combat and wartime, but traumatic events include:

  • Domestic violence
  • Natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Assault
  • Acts of terrorism
  • Car accidents

Trauma can also result from ongoing abuse; it doesn’t have to be a one-time incident.

Traumas like these can lead to long-term changes in your psyche. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can develop in response to trauma.

What are signs I am having trouble processing trauma?

It’s normal to need time to process trauma. But it’s important to recognize the signs that you or a loved one is experiencing long-term effects of trauma and could benefit from professional help.

Indications that you could use help managing your response to trauma include:

  • Reckless or self-destructive behavior
  • Attempts to avoid thinking about a traumatic event
  • Upsetting dreams about a traumatic event
  • Difficulty remembering certain aspects of a traumatic event
  • Discomfort talking about the traumatic event
  • Flashbacks
  • Avoiding circumstances that remind you of a traumatic event

You might notice these symptoms in the immediate period after a traumatic event, but if they persist for months or begin to interfere with your daily routine, it’s time to seek help.

What treatments can help me process trauma?

The therapy techniques offered at Fully Integrated Psychotherapy & Consultation allow you to manage the lingering effects of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Your therapist helps you understand the wide-reaching effects of a traumatic experience and how you can take control of your reactions to that experience.

Approaches your therapist may use include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which helps you identify and confront harmful thoughts like guilt, shame, and fear. Your therapist teaches you how to shift to more beneficial and healthy thoughts surrounding a traumatic event.

Other therapies include:

  • Mindfulness, to help you focus on the present moment
  • EMDR, to help you move past memories from a traumatic event
  • Internal family systems (IFS) therapy, to reduce internal conflict and feel safe
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), to learn how to process emotions
